Event Description

PhD scientists who move from academia to industry have very little prior knowledge of how clinical trials are conducted, yet clinical trials are the basis of how companies evaluate the safety, efficacy, and therapeutic value of new medical interventions. In this workshop we learn the details of clinical trial planning from small Phase I safety and dosage assessments in humans to large-scale Phase III randomized comparative trials and post-approval Phase IV monitoring all while adhering to strict ethical protocols, Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines, and regulatory oversight. The presenter will be Avantika Barve, PhD, Global Head Clinical Representativeness, Novartis.

The Princeton operation is associated especially with point-of-care diagnostics—developing technologies that allow clinicians to obtain laboratory-quality diagnostic information rapidly, at or near the patient rather than relying exclusively on a centralized laboratory. This area sits at the intersection of biology, chemistry, engineering, clinical medicine, and product development. This is a two day in-person only workshop. You only need to register once, however, all sessions are required.

SciPhD is run by Human Workflows, LLC (http://sciphd.com/) and helps trainees assess their current skill set, express it in business-friendly language as well as recognize/fill skill gaps in areas such as communication, leadership, team building, negotiation and project management. This workshop focuses on 24 essential core competencies valued by industry and business, relates those competencies to activities and behaviors commonly experienced by academic scientists through the scientific method, and demonstrates how those competencies work together to form the operational competencies that are essential in business.  These transition business competencies can also be applied by academic and government scientists in running their laboratories.  SciPhD is a very interactive and hands-on exposure to these concepts with real action items to take away from the workshop.  Throughout the program, students and postdocs will experience at least four behavioral-based interview experiences in which they will play the role of the candidate and the interviewer.

• Keynote speaker, will be Adrianne Wong, PhD who is Senior Director, Oncology Search and Evaluation, Global Business Development at pharmaceutical company Daiichi Sankyo. Dr. Wong will speak about how pharma decides what to prioritize in their portfolio and how to strategize innovation. This will help attendees as future industry professionals understand what happens behind the scenes in pharma as they make decisions on their therapeutic pipelines.
• Professional Development Workshop by Juliet Chin Hart, Career Strategy for Scientists: Building Your Value Proposition. A value proposition is the answer to "what do you offer, and why does it matter," stated clearly enough that someone else can act on it. Each attendee will leave with a written first draft of your value proposition that you can start using and refining in your resume, your next interview, or your next performance conversation. 
• Update of iJOBS activities and outcomes followed by our current Phase 3 trainees sharing about their iJOBS shadowing experiences and coursework.
• Networking lunch where industry professionals will share their advice with current trainees.

• The NIH requires faculty to be trained in how to mentor PhD students and postdocs.
• Even faculty who have mentored dozens of graduate students and postdocs can improve their skills in mentoring.
• The focus this workshop will be on:
  Aligning expectations with mentees 
  Promoting mentee research self-efficacy
  Dealing with students who are struggling with stress with guest speakers
• Lessons and interactive case studies will be from the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER).
• Interactions with fellow faculty will help you reflect on various mentoring situations, enhance your readiness to work with mentees and anticipate new situations.
• All faculty are invited and junior faculty are strongly encouraged to attend.
