Is the OMBS program completely online?
Yes. The Online Master of Biomedical Sciences (OMBS) is a fully online program. Course lectures and weekly learning activities are delivered asynchronously, allowing students flexibility in when they engage with course content. Students are not required to reside in New Jersey.

Are OMBS courses asynchronous?
Course lectures and weekly modules are asynchronous. Each course follows a traditional 15-week semester structure, with content organized into weekly modules. Students generally have the full week to complete the learning activities associated with each module. While lectures are asynchronous, course exams are scheduled for specific dates and times.

Why are exams scheduled if the program is asynchronous?
The OMBS program is designed to provide as much flexibility as possible while also preparing students for the types of structured examination environments they may encounter in medical and dental education. For this reason, examinations are administered at designated dates and times. Exam schedules will be communicated at the beginning of each semester and included in individual course syllabi so students can plan accordingly.

How are online exams administered?
Examinations are completed remotely using Rutgers-approved testing technologies and procedures. Specific examination requirements, permitted materials, technology requirements, and testing instructions will be communicated through individual courses. Students should review the Rutgers guidance on remote exams and assessments for additional information.

Are OMBS courses self-paced?
No. Although course lectures are asynchronous, OMBS courses are not self-paced. Each course follows a 15-week semester schedule, with modules organized by week and established deadlines for coursework and assessments.

How much time should I expect to spend on coursework each week?
The amount of time required will vary depending on the course, number of credits, and individual student. Students should expect graduate-level coursework to require regular weekly engagement with lectures, readings, assignments, and preparation for assessments.
