Fulbright IIE Resource Page

The Fulbright U.S. Student Program provides support for individual research projects, courses of formal study, or work as an English teaching assistant in more than 140 countries around the world. Since 1946, the program has pursued its founding mission of the ‘promotion of international good will through the exchange of students in the fields of education, culture, and science’ by sending more than 360,000 Fulbrighters around the world.

Is Fulbright IIE the Right Fit for You?

What are they looking for?

The Fulbright IIE seeks to facilitate cultural exchange and mutual understanding by enabling Americans to experience research and community engagement abroad. Host countries may have additional preferences.

Who is eligible to apply?

The Fulbright IIE supports U.S. citizens who have completed their bachelor’s degree but have not yet received a PhD at the time of application. There may be additional eligibility requirements for your host country.

What does this fellowship include?

The Fulbright IIE provides round-trip transportation, funding for cost of living while in the host country, and accident and health insurance. Some countries have additional grant allowances. The lengths and dates of the award vary by host country.

When should I apply?

You can apply for the Fulbright IIE at any point during your graduate studies.  Many graduate students apply to the Fulbright IIE to support dissertation fieldwork outside of the US. If you are a master’s student, you can apply for the grant to support a year abroad during program of study or after.  It is also possible to apply while a graduate student for support for post-doctoral research. The 2019-2020 competition opens on April 2, 2018, and our on-campus deadline is September 4, 2018.
