Featured Funder: The American Society of Safety Professionals Foundation

Posted on March 12, 2020 by Marian Thorpe

Pursuing a master’s or Ph.D. related to occupational safety and health? Check out the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) Foundation. The ASSP offers many scholarships for US and international graduate students (and undergrads too), ranging from $1,000 to $15,000. Students complete a single online application in order to be considered for all available scholarships. This year’s application is expected to open on September 15, 2020, and has a final deadline of December 1, 2020.

To be eligible, graduate students must have a minimum GPA of 3.5, be graduating in May 2021 or later, and meet certain credit hour requirements. The application consists of five short-answer questions, transcripts, and a minimum of one letter of recommendation. Students are graded on academic performance, leadership activity in ASSP and the safety community at large, motivations and goals for studying occupational safety and health, and recommendations.

Prospective applicants should read the ASSP’s Frequently Asked Questions page, which provides helpful information on eligibility, funding timeline, and the application process. In particular, note that while ASSP membership is not required, members do receive priority for many of the scholarships.

Applicants should further review the application packet, which includes more detailed instructions. As is the case with most funders, we recommend that for the questions on the application you give comprehensive, detailed answers—not short, generic responses—as these are more likely to be funded.
