The Smithsonian has dozens of fellowships and internships available for graduate students. GradFund has posted many popular ones previously, from research in art and visual culture, to aviation and space history, and even horticulture.
All Smithsonian Fellowships are open to US citizens and non-US citizens, and each award has different deadlines throughout the year. Give yourself enough time before the deadline to prepare a competitive application.
The Smithsonian Big Ten Academic Alliance Fellowship is exclusive to Rutgers University doctoral students, and the other colleges in the Big Ten consortium including University of Illinois, Indiana University, University of Iowa, University of Maryland, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, among others.
Any student who has received their candidacy and satisfied all degree requirements, except for the completion of the dissertation, is eligible to apply. The fellow will receive $32,700 USD annually to work with a Smithsonian advisor and conduct independent research related to Smithsonian collections, experts, and/or facilities. In addition, Big Ten Alliance Fellows can apply for a travel/relocation allowance and up to $4,000 USD of research stipend to cover related conference costs.
Applicants are recommended to search for a potential Smithsonian advisor and archive/department in the publication Smithsonian Opportunities for Research and Study (SORS). With a maximum of two years for completion, fellowship funds, and access to the Smithsonian’s numerous scholars, collections, resources, archives and library materials, the Big Ten Academic Alliance Fellowship is a remarkable award for Rutgers students.
