Applying for Funding in the Humanities: Advice from a Fellowship Adviser

Posted on February 8, 2016 by Ben Arenger

With the spring semester in full swing, now is a good time to start planning ahead for the fall application deadline season. For students in the humanities, it is important to be aware of your external funding award options.

To be sure, there is a higher concentration of grants and fellowships available at the stage of dissertation writing for students in the humanities and humanistic social sciences. The Mellon/ACLS Dissertation Completion Fellowship is one example of an award that could support for your final year of doctoral study. To be competitive for this award, you would need to make the case that your research contributes to humanistic knowledge broadly speaking and that you will complete and defend your dissertation within the year of fellowship support. There are also more thematically focused dissertation completion fellowship awards, such as the Charlotte W. Newcombe Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship, the Guggenheim Foundation Dissertation Fellowship and the Mellon-Council on European Studies Completion Fellowship.

If you are still in the early stages of your graduate study, you may want to consider the Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship. At the stage of dissertation research, there are grants and fellowships that can fund your research at archives and overseas. The Fulbright IIE and Fulbright Hays, as well as the Social Science Research Council International Dissertation Research Fellowship fund extended stays abroad.

As you consider your external funding options, be sure to consult the GradFund website and consider setting up a planning meeting with us.
