Writing a Statement of Purpose
Last week we had some fun thinking about our audience of educated scholars who may or may not be members of our own disciplines. In doing so, we’ve also created a clearer picture of ourselves as an online community, as well as real life, embodied readers and writers. For this week’s blogs, please choose one of the “reader personas” created in one of the blogs from the past two weeks and write a blog post “responding” to one of those figures, telling them about your research ideas.
Don’t worry about getting everything down, think of this as the beginning of a conversation. You may find it helpful to write a letter “Dear Skeptical Humanist” or “To the Well-Endowed Science Institute,” or you might dive right in. The goal, though, is to write in the casual tone of the blog and in your own voice. The purpose here is to let yourself be free to write without going too far into jargon. Group B should post responses by 8 p.m. on Thursday August 11th. Group D will post comments by 8 p.m. on Sunday August 14th.
